How can I get my PC to read an SD card that it doesn't seem to see?

Got an SD card with video on it from a friend. The SD card reader works for sure because I just used it with my own SD card. The sent SD card was verified before it was mailed but neither my Compaq nc6220 laptop nor my Canon Powershot A550 camera will read the card. Any help?
